Wines for Weddings
There is a huge amount of work required in organising a wedding! One item that is often left till late is the wine. I have attended weddings with not enough wine or where the quality has been appalling: the wine being bought on price rather than quality. As an average wedding costs approximately £14,000, an extra £1 per bottle is not going to make a lot of difference to the overall cost, but can make a huge difference to your guests enjoyment! After all, the devil is in the detail.
Julian Eggar, of Wine JEMS, has eighteen years experience in the wine business and can offer lots of free advice to make your wedding simply the best vinously!
Some points to consider:
Venue
Finding a venue is not necessarily the easiest task. Bear in mind the following:
· Location as regards closeness to church.
· Adequate parking for guests and suppliers (caterers, florists).
· Enquire whether there is an in house caterer or can you supply your own caterer and wine?
Corkage & Choosing Wine
Function Caterers are renowned for their mark up on drinks (as indeed are restaurants). If you can buy from a reputable wine merchant at a reasonable price, you can save and guarantee quality.
Some of the larger venues, have caterers with terrible wine lists and a lack of choice. If corkage is offered, it is worth looking at, from a quality aspect, (Nothing worse than bad wine at a function!) and even after adding £5 or £10 corkage can still be cheaper than the house plonk.
Always ask to taste the wine from whoever you purchase it, and if the vintage changes (as it quite often does), make sure you are informed and given the opportunity to retaste it.
Wine for a Wedding List
People are now getting married much later than previously with the result that many people have most of the necessities for married life before they tie the knot! Think of using a wine list from a reputable merchant to build a selection, a cellar or even some everyday wine.
